E-Prescriptions for Privately Insured Patients

Your medication prescribed digitally – fast, secure and without postal delivery

Neuro Praxis Düsseldorf offers privately insured patients the option of receiving eligible medication prescriptions electronically as an e-prescription.

In many cases, this eliminates the need for a traditional paper prescription. You no longer need to collect your prescription from our practice or wait for it to arrive by post. Once issued by your physician, the prescription is made available electronically and can be redeemed digitally at a pharmacy.

This makes medication management considerably easier, particularly for our existing patients and for repeat prescriptions.

What is an e-prescription?

An e-prescription is the digital form of a medical prescription for medication.

Instead of issuing a handwritten or printed and signed prescription, we create the prescription electronically. It is digitally signed by the prescribing physician and made available via Germany’s secure healthcare telematics infrastructure.

An e-prescription is therefore not simply a prescription sent by email or as a PDF file. It is a dedicated, secure digital system for medical prescriptions.

What are the benefits?

E-prescriptions make obtaining medication considerably more convenient, particularly for repeat prescriptions.

The e-prescription is particularly convenient if you do not live in Düsseldorf, as it can save unnecessary journeys and waiting times.

What do privately insured patients need for an e-prescription?

The most important requirement is your personal German health insurance number, known as the Krankenversichertennummer or KVNR.

Please note that the KVNR is not the same as your existing insurance, membership or policy number with your private health insurance provider.

The KVNR usually consists of one letter followed by nine digits.

If you do not yet know your KVNR, please contact your private health insurance provider to obtain it.

If you would like to receive e-prescriptions from us in the future, please send us your KVNR once via our secure online reception.

We will then add the number to your patient record. It will therefore already be available to us for future prescription requests and does not need to be provided again each time.

A personal visit to our practice solely for the purpose of collecting a prescription is generally not required when an e-prescription can be issued.

How do I receive my e-prescription?

Once your medication has been prescribed, the prescription is digitally signed by the physician and made available electronically.

To access it digitally, privately insured patients require the appropriate digital services provided by their private health insurance provider. These generally include a HealthID (GesundheitsID) and a suitable e-prescription function or the official “Das E-Rezept” app.

Your private health insurance provider can advise you which services are available to you and how to set up your HealthID.

How do I redeem my e-prescription?

Once the prescription has been made available, you can manage it using the appropriate digital application and redeem it at a pharmacy.

You can generally choose which pharmacy you wish to use. For example, you can send the prescription digitally to a pharmacy and ask them to check in advance whether the prescribed medication is in stock or needs to be ordered.

Depending on the provider, it may also be possible to redeem your prescription through an online pharmacy.

This means that the entire process, from the medical prescription to the pharmacy, can be handled digitally.

Particularly convenient for repeat prescriptions

One of the greatest advantages of e-prescriptions is the simplified process for medication that you require on a regular basis.

If the medical requirements for a repeat prescription are met, the organisational effort associated with a traditional paper prescription is no longer necessary. You do not need to visit our practice solely to collect the prescription, nor do you need to wait for postal delivery.

You can submit your prescription request as usual via our online reception. Following medical review, eligible prescriptions can then be issued electronically.

Can I receive an e-prescription after a video consultation?

Yes, where appropriate.

An e-prescription can also simplify your treatment following a video consultation.

If the medical requirements for prescribing medication are met during a medical video consultation, an eligible prescription can subsequently be issued electronically.

This is particularly convenient for patients who live further away from Düsseldorf, as it enables a largely digital process.

How does reimbursement work for privately insured patients?

Issuing a prescription electronically does not fundamentally change its status as a private medical prescription.

After the prescription has been redeemed, the pharmacy can provide the relevant information or receipt required for reimbursement. Depending on your insurer’s procedures, you can then submit this to your private health insurance provider and, where applicable, to your Beihilfe office.

Can all prescriptions be issued electronically?

Not yet.

Although e-prescriptions are now available for many standard medication prescriptions, certain types of prescriptions are not yet covered by the regular e-prescription system.

This applies in particular to certain special prescriptions, including prescriptions for controlled substances (Betäubungsmittel/BtM prescriptions) and T-prescriptions.

Where a specific prescription form is still legally required for a particular medication, we will of course issue the prescription using the appropriate procedure.

Can I still receive a traditional paper prescription?

Of course.

The e-prescription expands the services available through our practice and is intended to make obtaining medication easier and more convenient.

If you prefer not to use an e-prescription, if your private health insurance provider does not yet support the necessary digital functions, or if the particular prescription cannot be issued electronically, we can continue to provide you with a traditional private prescription.

Information for patients with statutory health insurance who are treated as self-paying patients

Patients with statutory health insurance can receive treatment at our private practice on a self-paying basis.

If our diagnostic assessment and medical evaluation result in a recommendation for medication, we document this treatment recommendation in our medical report.

As a rule, self-paying patients with statutory health insurance subsequently discuss our recommendation with their general practitioner or the specialist responsible for their ongoing care. The recommended medication can then be reviewed and, where the relevant requirements are met, prescribed through the statutory health insurance system.

The e-prescription service described on this page is therefore intended for our privately insured patients.

Would you like to receive e-prescriptions from us in the future?

If you are privately insured, you can prepare for future e-prescriptions now:

1. If necessary, obtain your personal German health insurance number (KVNR) from your private health insurance provider.

2. Send us your KVNR once via our secure online reception.

3. Set up your HealthID and the digital functions required for e-prescriptions through your private health insurance provider.

4. When you submit a future prescription request, we can then check whether the requested medication can be prescribed electronically.

This enables us to provide many medication prescriptions more quickly and securely, without unnecessary postal delivery.
