Baroreflex Testing

Precise Assessment of Blood Pressure Regulation at Neuro Praxis Düsseldorf

The baroreflex is one of the most important regulatory mechanisms of the autonomic nervous system. It helps maintain stable blood pressure and heart rate during activities such as standing up, physical exertion, or stress. Impairment of this reflex can lead to dizziness, circulatory problems, fainting episodes, palpitations, or blood pressure fluctuations.

At Neuro Praxis Düsseldorf, we assess baroreflex function as part of our specialized autonomic nervous system diagnostics.

What is the Baroreflex?

Specialized pressure sensors (baroreceptors) located in the major blood vessels continuously monitor blood pressure. When blood pressure rises or falls, signals are transmitted to the brain within seconds. The autonomic nervous system then automatically adjusts heart rate, vascular tone, and circulatory regulation.

A healthy baroreflex is essential for:

  • Stabilizing blood pressure when standing up
  • Adapting circulation to physical activity
  • Preventing dizziness and fainting
  • Regulating heart rate and vascular tone

When is Baroreflex Testing Useful?

Baroreflex assessment may be particularly helpful in patients with:

  • Dizziness upon standing
  • Syncope (fainting) or near-fainting episodes
  • Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)
  • Dysautonomia
  • Orthostatic hypotension
  • Unexplained palpitations or tachycardia
  • Significant blood pressure fluctuations
  • Long COVID with autonomic involvement
  • Small fiber neuropathy with autonomic symptoms

How is the Examination Performed?

Baroreflex function is evaluated using modern autonomic function testing techniques. Heart rate, blood pressure, and additional cardiovascular parameters are continuously recorded and analyzed under standardized conditions.

The examination is typically performed as part of our comprehensive autonomic nervous system evaluation and can be combined with other diagnostic procedures, including tilt-table testing, heart rate variability analysis, and additional autonomic function tests.

Is the Examination Uncomfortable?

The examination is non-invasive, painless, and generally very well tolerated. It does not involve any radiation exposure. The data obtained provide valuable information about the function of your autonomic nervous system and can offer important clues for diagnosis and the development of an individualized treatment plan.

Specialized Autonomic Nervous System Diagnostics

Neuro Praxis Düsseldorf has extensive expertise in the diagnosis of dysautonomia, POTS, orthostatic circulatory disorders, and other autonomic nervous system conditions. By combining advanced diagnostic technologies, disturbances of autonomic cardiovascular regulation can often be identified far more accurately than with conventional testing alone.

Baroreflex testing is an important component of autonomic cardiovascular assessment and helps identify the underlying causes of dizziness, circulatory disturbances, and autonomic symptoms in a targeted and scientifically sound manner.
