Electromyography (EMG) to diagnose conditions such as muscular dystrophy, muscular atrophy, myasthenia and polyneuropathy

Electromyography (EMG) in the Neuro Practice Düsseldorf

Electromyography (EMG) is a medical examination that measures and records the electrical activity of muscles. It is used to detect muscle disorders and to confirm or rule out diagnoses of diseases affecting the muscular and nervous systems.

EMG is a safe examination that is generally not associated with significant side effects.

The results of an EMG can help diagnose conditions such as muscular dystrophy, muscle atrophy, myasthenia gravis, and polyneuropathy. It can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of therapies and to assess the prognosis of certain diseases.

Medication Pause:

For the EMG examination (electromyography), it is important that we take possible bleeding risks from blood-thinning medications into account. Since very fine needles are inserted into the muscles during the examination, certain anticoagulant medications may otherwise increase the risk of bruising or prolonged bleeding.

We therefore ask you to prepare as follows:

  • Marcumar as well as all so-called NOAC/DOAC medications (e.g. Eliquis, Xarelto, Pradaxa, Lixiana) should generally be paused 24 hours before the examination.
  • ASS usually does not need to be paused for a standard EMG examination.

Important note:

Please never stop taking blood thinners on your own without consulting your treating physician, especially if they were prescribed for atrial fibrillation, thrombosis, artificial heart valves, or other important medical conditions.

Please let us know briefly whether the above medication pause is feasible for you or whether further discussion is needed.
