To ensure a well-founded assessment of symptoms or memory impairment, we conduct a comprehensive and structured diagnostic evaluation in our practice. In certain cases, a lumbar puncture (cerebrospinal fluid analysis) is a crucial component of this process.

Why is the analysis of cerebrospinal fluid important?
By analyzing the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), we can identify specific biological markers. There is a wide range of applications, for example:

1. Diagnosis of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases:
By analyzing cells, proteins, and antibodies in the cerebrospinal fluid, critical conditions can be detected:

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS): This involves looking for so-called oligoclonal bands (specific immunoglobulins) that indicate a chronic inflammatory process in the brain and spinal cord.
  • Meningitis (inflammation of the meninges) or Enzephalitis: If an infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi is suspected, the laboratory analysis of the CSF provides rapid certainty and identifies the exact pathogen.
  • Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS): An acute inflammation of the nerve roots, which usually shows up in the CSF as a significant increase in protein without a simultaneous rise in cell count.

2. Exclusion or detection of hemorrhages (bleeding)
If a blood vessel ruptures in the brain (particularly in a so-called subarachnoid hemorrhage), blood flows into the CSF space. If a patient suddenly experiences extreme, sudden-onset severe headaches ("thunderclap headache") and the computed tomography (CT) scan is normal, a lumbar puncture can be used to detect minute amounts of blood or its breakdown products (xanthochromia).

3. Diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases
CSF examinations are becoming increasingly important in the evaluation of dementia. In Alzheimer's dementia, typical biomarkers such as altered tau protein and beta-amyloid proteins can be detected in the cerebrospinal fluid, often at a very early stage.
