Stroke – A Medical Emergency
Stroke Follow-Up Care and Secondary Prevention at Neuro Praxis Düsseldorf
Stroke is one of the most common neurological conditions and constitutes a medical emergency. It occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is suddenly interrupted or when bleeding occurs within the brain. Without rapid treatment, brain cells can suffer irreversible damage within minutes.
There are two main types of stroke:
- Ischemic stroke: caused by the blockage of a blood vessel, usually by a blood clot.
- Hemorrhagic stroke: caused by bleeding within the brain.
Recognizing Stroke Symptoms – Time Is Brain
Typical symptoms usually occur suddenly and may include:
- Weakness or paralysis on one side of the body
- Numbness affecting the face, arm, or leg
- Speech difficulties or slurred speech
- Problems understanding language
- Sudden visual disturbances
- Dizziness and balance problems
- Coordination difficulties
- Double vision
- Severe, sudden-onset headache
If a stroke is suspected, every minute counts.
Call emergency services immediately (112 in Germany) or seek urgent medical attention at a stroke unit or neurological emergency department.
Acute Stroke Treatment Belongs in the Hospital
The acute treatment of stroke must always take place in a specialized hospital setting. Modern therapies such as intravenous thrombolysis ("clot-busting" medication) and mechanical thrombectomy can help restore blood flow to the brain as quickly as possible.
Neuro Praxis Düsseldorf does not provide acute stroke treatment. Our role begins after hospital discharge, focusing on neurological follow-up care and long-term prevention of recurrent strokes.
After a Stroke: Reducing the Risk of Another Event
Following a stroke, patients remain at increased risk of future strokes and other vascular diseases. Comprehensive secondary prevention is therefore essential.
Key components include:
- Optimizing blood pressure control
- Treating elevated cholesterol and lipid disorders
- Managing diabetes mellitus
- Smoking cessation
- Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight
- Regular physical activity
- Treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, especially atrial fibrillation
- Diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea
- Adjustment of blood-thinning medications when appropriate
- Optimization of cholesterol-lowering therapy
Stroke Follow-Up Care at Neuro Praxis Düsseldorf
We provide structured neurological follow-up care for patients after stroke.
Our goals are to:
- Understand the underlying cause of the stroke as completely as possible
- Reduce the individual risk of recurrent events
- Assess and monitor neurological deficits
- Optimize preventive medications
- Monitor long-term treatment outcomes
Depending on the individual situation, follow-up care may include:
- Comprehensive neurological examination
- Review and optimization of secondary prevention strategies
- Ultrasound evaluation of the arteries supplying the brain
- Neurophysiological testing
- Assessment of cognitive impairment
- Evaluation of dizziness, gait disturbances, or neuropathic symptoms
- Sleep medicine diagnostics when sleep apnea is suspected
- Coordination of additional rehabilitation measures
Rehabilitation and Return to Daily Life
Many patients benefit from specialized rehabilitation following a stroke.
Depending on the nature and severity of neurological deficits, treatment may include:
- Physical therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Speech and language therapy
- Neuropsychological rehabilitation
- Cognitive training programs
Neuro Praxis Düsseldorf supports patients through neurological assessment of rehabilitation progress and long-term treatment planning.
Our Approach
A stroke is often not a single isolated event but the beginning of long-term neurological care. For this reason, we place great emphasis on individualized, risk-oriented follow-up management.
By combining advanced neurological diagnostics, evidence-based secondary prevention, and regular follow-up assessments, we aim to minimize the risk of future strokes while helping our patients maintain their independence, neurological function, and quality of life over the long term.
